Why are messages copied to brokers?

Which messages are copied for review, what you can see, and what members are told.

Your community can copy some members' messages to brokers so you can check that people are safe. The message is still delivered normally. The copy goes to Messages for review.

Why a message is copied

Each copy shows a Copy Reason:

  • First Contact: the first message between two members
  • New Member: a message from someone who joined recently
  • High Risk Listing: a message about a listing tagged high or critical risk
  • Flagged User: a message to or from a member under monitoring
  • Random Sample: a message chosen at random for spot checks

Which of these apply depends on the settings in Configuration.

What you can see

When you open a copied message, you see it together with the messages that came before it in the same conversation, up to the 50 most recent. Messages sent after it are not shown. Earlier messages appear even if they were not copied. For a group conversation, you see the group's earlier messages. A message the sender has changed is marked edited.

What members are told

When message copying is switched on, members see a notice in their conversations. It says messages may be reviewed by a coordinator for safeguarding.

Your responsibility

  • Read only what you need to make a decision.
  • Never share what you read, except with your safeguarding lead or when the law requires it.
  • Opening a copied message is recorded, and so are your review decisions, with your name.
This is done on the main website. The accessible site does not have this page.
