Getting started

What is timebanking?

Timebanking lets people help each other using time instead of money. One hour of help earns one time credit.

Timebanking is a way for people in a community to help each other using time instead of money.

When you spend an hour helping another member, you earn one time credit. A time credit is a record of one hour. You can then spend your credits to get help from someone else.

Everyone's time is equal

An hour is an hour, whatever the task. An hour of gardening, an hour of language practice and an hour of computer help are each worth one time credit. Nobody's time is worth more than anyone else's.

What people exchange

Members offer and ask for all kinds of everyday help, for example:

  • a lift to the shops
  • help with a form or a phone
  • a friendly chat or a walk
  • small jobs around the home or garden
  • teaching a skill, such as cooking or music

You do not need special qualifications. Everyone has something to offer.

Who looks after your community

Each community has its own team. Coordinators (sometimes called brokers) help members connect and keep exchanges safe. Administrators look after the community and its settings. If you are unsure about anything, you can ask them.
